Sharks at Small Hope

If you have been diving with us at Small Hope Bay Lodge in the past, I'm sure you have noticed that Caribbean reef sharks are quite common. However, if you have not been lucky enough to encounter one in person and you are nervous about sharks, there is nothing to be concerned about because they end to be shy around divers and snorkelers.

Although over fishing has been threatening sharks for years, the Bahamas has outlawed all commercial shark fishing, making our reefs a sanctuary for Caribbean reef sharks, bull sharks, tiger sharks, blacktips and whitetips. Click here for a great article about whitetips migrating to the Bahamas.

This reminds us of when Pierre-Yves Cousteau visited Small Hope to dive with Jeff and discuss shark conservation, just as Jack-Yves Cousteau did with Dick Birch. Check out the video here.

Click here for a video of Ralph the Reef Shark, a new friend of ours who has been hanging out around one of our wreck dives recently. Watch how friendly he is!

Small Hope Bay Lodge is open for it's 56th season!

We're open once again, and proud to say that this is our 56th season. Thankfully, we avoided the damage that Hurricane Joaquin brought to the Carolinas and the Central Bahamas, and we keep the families affected by the storm in our thoughts.
We are excited about many things in the new season, two of which being our new outdoor showers, and an article posted in the Washington Post about the national parks on Andros. Follow the link here to read the article, and the link here to watch Jeff talk about the new season.

New Outdoor Showers!!!

At the suggestion of two guests, Jeff has decided to install outdoor showers outside of each cabin. They are very spacious and have hot and cold water, along with two waterfall shower heads each. What better way to take a shower after a long day of diving fishing or relaxing than looking out at lovely Calabash Bay with the family or a loved one?

Hurricane Joaquin

While we keep the Central Bahamas, Bermuda, and everyone else affected by Hurricane Joaquin in our thoughts, we are happy to say that Small Hope Bay lodge and the rest of Andros Island has survived the storm without any major damage. Jeff gave everybody Friday and Saturday off to prepare for the storm, but the worst weather we got was fifteen mph winds and a few brief showers. So, we were able to spend our days off relaxing, enjoying some time with the family, or playing poker and eating Erin's delicious food in the lodge.
Now that the Hurricane Joaquin is continuing to head North, we have some more flat seas and another beautiful day in paradise.
